Abstract

This chapter is aimed at strengthening the connection between ethnography and transdisciplinary inquiry, with a case study focused on the research area of adaptation and resilience. Stories obtained through ethnographic methods offer new transdisciplinary insights into how resilience and adaptation might be constituted within different communities; they are also a way of conveying these insights to academic and non-academic audiences. Moreover, the transformative impact of storytelling on the researcher’s relations with the ‘researched’ challenges the researcher’s preconceptions, promotes empathy, and encourages more participatory and socially just practices. The chapter concludes with a set of tools for researchers wishing to engage in storytelling ethnography as a form of transdisciplinary inquiry.
