Abstract | Depression is a mood condition that is the second largest cause of disability globally. This chapter describes the characteristics and associated features of depression. It considers different ways of viewing depression, such as whether it is a medical disorder or a stress response. The chapter explores the relationship of both grief and suicidality with depression. Different responses to depression are described, including medical, psychological, and lifestyle interventions as well as the rationales for key interventions. Finally, this chapter describes generic recommendations for counsellors to consider when working with clients showing signs of depression. |
