Abstract

Introduction
Teaching nursing students the value of research and health promotion can be challenging. Finding interesting topics can be an incentive to participate. In 2020, the topic of encopresis captured the attention of students and academics at a university in Queensland Australia. This came with the realization that encopresis affects 30 percent of children globally potentially leading to chronic bowel related issues in adulthood.
Aim
The aim of the study was for nursing students and nurse academics to design, develop and implement an innovative and fun health promotion resource about healthy bowel functioning for children and evaluate its effectiveness.
Research Design
The study began with a think tank session involving undergraduate nursing students, academics and paediatric nurses coming together to design a resource. The resource would include a kit with seven different poop it characters (reflecting types of stools), a poop it game, six story books, a digestive system apron, and an adapted children’s Bristol stool toilet chart.
Parents/caregivers trialled the kit with children and were then invited to complete a questionnaire. Data analysis involved a mixed methods approach. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of qualitative data was guided by Braun and Clarke (2006).

Results
Findings revealed that ‘The Poop it Kit’ was a great and useful tool that increased children’s and parents/caregivers’ understanding of bowel health in a fun and enjoyable way. Positive behavioral changes in children in relation to bowel health were reported.

Conclusion
Involving undergraduate nursing students with nurse academics in health promotion and research activities that have real world application has proven worthwhile. The Poop it Kit proved to be a fun resource that had a positive impact on children. Further research and implementation to a wider audience is now underway for refinement of this resource.
