Abstract | This Noosa Shire (Queensland, Australia) based project exemplifies effective collaborative stakeholder processes to build resilience and foster recovery in bushfire affected communities. The project was led by University of Southern Queensland and delivered in partnership with Zero Emissions Noosa Inc., Noosa Council and Noosa Environmental Education Hub. During the 2019 Noosa bushfires, approximately eight thousand people were forced to rapidly evacuate from their homes. Many residents were unable to return home for extended periods due to dangerous conditions and power outages, so sheltered in emergency evacuation centres. With this in mind, we developed a project with four key components: 1) installation of battery systems on two of Noosa Shire’s evacuation centres to ensure sustained power to the evacuation centres during times of environmental crisis, 2) analysis of evacuees’ experiences of staying at evacuation centres, 3) workshops to educate the community about battery systems and disaster preparedness, and 4) delivery of a curriculum aligned high school education program to teach students about battery systems. During project delivery, further interconnections with key stakeholders occurred including Queensland Fire Emergency and Emergency Services, Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (Disaster Recovery) and Ecovantage (Clean Energy Retailer), and Noosa Shire residents. Information sharing sessions, delivered via community workshops targeted disaster preparedness for the person, home and community, and psycho-physical resilience building for individuals and families. Our project, funded by the Australian Government Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program, exemplifies the importance of fostering information-seeking conversations on preparedness and recovery between stakeholders and community through collaborative stakeholder processes in a rapidly changing disaster landscape. |
