Abstract

Introduction: As cancer treatments improve, quality of life after cancer has become a priority for researchers. With up to 75% of cancer patients suffering from cognitive complaints during or after cancer treatment, understanding real world changes to daily life is essential to prepare patients for the changes that may occur.

Objectives/Aims: To develop a grounded theory explaining how cancer related cognitive impairment after chemotherapy affects daily life.

Description/Methodology: A constructivist grounded theory approach was taken to address the research question. Participants meeting eligibility criteria were identified initially through a single regional cancer centre, with the theoretical sample recruited online via passive social media methods. Data collection occurred via semi-structured interviews. The 11 essential elements of grounded theory methodology were followed, with sampling continuing until theoretical saturation was achieved.

Results/Outcomes: Data identified a multiway struggle between the patient, cancer, healthcare professionals, the healthcare system and daily life. A precarious balance of immense vulnerability with a constant struggle for control resulted in the theory emerging, The rollercoaster theory of cancer – strap in because you can’t get off.

Conclusion: Equipping patients with information related to controls and vulnerability may be an effective strategy to increase patient participation in their treatment and key decisions at a time of great vulnerability.
