Abstract | Universities in Australia and overseas regularly survey students about their experiences and this Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) data is generally reviewed when assessing academic performance and academic promotion applications. The release of SET data can often be met with dread by the most experienced academic, let alone a sessional academic who has been given a subject to teach a week before the semester starts, and who is reliant on ‘good’ scores for further work. Yet the literature tells us that SET scores are influenced by a range of factors — the type of subject, the gender and race of the academic, and even institutional circumstances beyond the academic’s control, such as a change of academic calendar or the refusal of an extension. The decision by several universities in recent years to make the data from each subject visible to the whole university, including students, has served to exacerbate any negative impacts this may have on an academic’s mental health. |
