Abstract | I argue that there is an urgent need to move from perceiving linguistic diversity in East Timor as a problem to perceiving it as a valuable human resource. The active management of the East Timorese language ecology can promote both bilingualism and biliteracy and sustain the country's rich plurilinguistic heritage while respecting the linguistic rights of all its citizens. |
