Abstract | The Rural Economies Centre of Excellence (RECoE) in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), Queensland, are seeking an evidence base regarding the impacts of COVID-19 on rural and regional labour markets in Queensland industries, particularly agricultural industries. Due to COVID-19, there have been restrictions at the interstate and international travel, and the subsequent impacts of these and other adaptations such as the Australian Agriculture Workers Code (adopted by NSW, ACT, Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory); Queensland’s own COVID-19 freight movement and logistics policies for agribusiness, food manufacturing and commercial fishing workers, need to be understood. The anecdotal evidence suggests that border controls for biosecurity measures have had economic, workforce and also social, financial and mental wellbeing impacts on rural industries and especially rural and regional communities.DAF have asked RECoE to provide a workforce analysis and make recommendations by 30 January 2021. Within limited time frames required a Rapid Appraisal Approach1 has been undertaken. This report provides a brief analysis of the findings of the Rapid Appraisal across rural/regional Queensland. |
