| Abstract | In her book, Friction, Anna Tsing writes: 'scale is not just a neutral frame for viewing the world; scale must be brought into being: proposed, practiced, and evaded, as well as taken for granted. Scales are claimed and contested in cultural and political projects.' This paper interprets Tsing’s comments into a more-than-human context to explore how scale is performed and contested within an urban estuarine ecology. My interest is to consider the processes through which the categories of estuarine geography – the times, the distinct bodies, species, and relationships – perform scales – and in turn how the work of interpretation across scales maintains and refigures the categories of the estuary. |
