Abstract | Pathways programs pose a particular set of challenges when it comes to establishing sound academic integrity practices for students. Students frequently commence their Pathways studies with no experience of academic integrity expectations and may be familiar with online cultures with very different integrity standards. Clearly Pathways programs play an important educational role in supporting students to develop sound integrity practices. However, we must also establish responsible procedures for academic misconduct and provide appropriate opportunities for practicing good integrity through well-designed assessments. This paper reports on the development of a resource to support Pathways educators to design assessments for sound academic integrity. The design ideas were based upon a literature review, students-as-partners workshops, and staff interviews. A three-step framework aims to support educators to design assessments that are meaningful and valuable for students; mitigate academic integrity issues through building-in deterrence and detection features; and eliminate common obstacles to integrity caused by poor design (we introduce the concept of an ‘academic integrity assessment hygiene check’). Our presentation will give an overview of the framework and provide suggestions and examples for each of the two first stages, and a checklist for the third. We welcome feedback on this developing resource from Pathways practitioners. |
