UniSQ College Seminar Series 2024.

Abstract

In this session, we explore the nature of teaching and learning challenges for staff and incarcerated students involved in UniSQ College's enabling courses. We focus initially on the results of our research where we analysed 112 incarcerated students' responses to their end-of-course portfolio assignment for the course TPP0122 Study Management. Students were asked to reflect on and identify academic and personal challenges they encountered while studying. We use the conceptual lens of 'bounded agency' (Rubenson & Desjardins, 2009) and the sociological notion of structure versus agency, to consider the implications of findings for course coordinators and lecturers. The concept of ‘bounded agency’ suggests that individual agency is shaped and constrained by external factors such as economic, social, and cultural resources. Recognizing ‘bounded agency’ can help disrupt deficit thinking and encourage a better understanding of the factors that play a role in shaping opportunities. During the session, participants will be encouraged to reflect on and share how their agency is constrained, and collaborate on potential solutions to enhance teaching and learning in our incarcerated courses.

KeywordsWidening participation; barriers to access and participation; carceral education; bounded agency; structure vs agency
