Abstract | When a Los Angeles judge ruled on November 12, 2021, that the conservatorship which Britney Spears had been held under for almost 14 years must be terminated, the outcome represented not only a significant victory for the pop star and her fans, but a defining moment for fandom and participatory culture generally. Since the conservatorship over Spears’s person and estate was established in 2008, fans have expressed concern for her welfare, with the #FreeBritney fan movement gathering momentum in 2019. Decoding Instagram posts of the pop superstar, committed fans seemed concerned that Britney was effectively trapped by the conservatorship and her management team, particularly by her apparently controlling father. Subsequently, fans successfully mobilised both online and on the ground forms of activism to support and encourage the star to reclaim legal control over her financial and personal affairs. |
