Abstract | Regionalism describes both the process and the ideological structure supporting decentralized territorial governance in multinational states. Multinationalism has been a structural part of the modern state for centuries. Article 1 of the Treaty of Union united Scotland, England,Wales and Ireland into a new polity. However, in Europe, North America and in most former European colonies, regionalism has been the proxy for a series of constitutional reforms that recognized, and sometimes promoted, sub-state national communities. This entry is divided into three sections followed by a conclusion. The first part describes the role that regionalism has in modern liberal democracies. The second section discusses the process that allows for the accommodation of regionalist claims. The third section summaries a selection of critiques levelled against the constitutional accommodation of substate nationalism. |
