Abstract

Multiple definitions of patriotism exist, but in general, it is regarded as an ideology in which patriots demonstrate an attachment to a set of values that they perceive to be a component of their national identity. Patriotism is manifested silently and overtly. Patriots must comply silently and diligently with the country’s laws and values. In addition, they are expected to be periodically politically active by expressing their opinions and even less frequently by performing acts of selfless service. Most of these selfless acts of service are performed while wearing a military uniform that identify them as representatives of their country’s values. In this encyclopedia’s entry, it will be explained that in a modern liberal society, patriotism is based on the system of values associated with constitutional patriotism. However, unlike nationalists, patriots are not expected to place their nation above others....
