| Abstract | The Kingdom of Denmark consists of three distinct territories: Denmark proper, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. Denmark proper has a population of approximately 5.9 million and is geographically linked to Germany in the south and to Sweden in the north via the Øresund Bridge. The Faroe Islands, home to about 54,000 people, have been under Danish sovereignty since 1380 and currently enjoy extensive autonomy, with home rule granted in 1948. Greenland, with a population of approximately 56,000, has been an autonomous region since 2009. Individuals of North Germanic descent predominantly inhabit Denmark and the Faroe Islands, whereas approximately 88 per cent of Greenland’s population is of Inuit ancestry. Crucially, Greenland’s extractive sector has the potential to provide a significant portion of the world’s rare minerals, which are essential for the future economic development of advanced industrial states in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. This essay examines, among other factors, the constitutional implications of these territorial arrangements. |
