Abstract | Sexism is still rife in workplaces and schools despite more than 40 years of formal and informal activities aimed at eliminating gender inequality, and the Australian government’s acceptance that gender equality is correlated to improved productivity, innovation, and growth. Separate bodies of research have investigated the deleterious impact of sexism in corporate workplaces as well as the progression of gendered stereotypes within schools regarding subject selection; however, not much is known about how sexism manifests in schools as workplaces, and even less is known about how males can ally themselves against institutionalised sexism in the educational context. In response to this, this paper presents a critical autoethnographic account of a male high school teacher’s ongoing attempt at enacting a critical pedagogy aimed at deconstructing sexism within an Australian school, and its corresponding consequences. |
