Abstract | Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely utilized as functional nanofillers for various polymer matrices. Owing to their unique cylinder-shaped structure, high specific surface area, and certain chemical groups on the surface, the CNTs/polymer nanocomposites exhibit superior thermal stability, flame retardancy, dielectric, and mechanical properties. The functionalization of CNTs has been a subject of interest for decades. The decoration of CNTs can combine the flame-retardant effects of nitrogen/phosphorus elements to improve the fire safety of polymer/CNT nanocomposites with better dispersion and improved mechanical properties. On the other hand, the decorated insulating layer can inhibit the formation of conductive CNT networks and suppress the dielectric loss of the polymer/CNT nanocomposites. In this chapter, the various preparation techniques for CNTs/polymer nanocomposites are described. In addition, methods to characterize the decorated CNTs (d-CNTs) are also discussed. Finally, the effects of the d-CNTs on the performance of polymer nanocomposites, such as morphology, thermal stability, flame retardancy, dielectric properties, electromagnetic shielding properties, and mechanical properties are also covered. This chapter will help with the preparation of high-performance functional CNTs/polymer nanocomposites. |
