Abstract

English teachers are uniquely positioned regarding possibilities for how to embed First Nationsperspectives (Worrell, 2024). This is due to the availability and versatility of numerous texts authoredby Indigenous peoples (Worrell, 2024). Engaging with these texts meaningfully can effectively promotereconciliation and healing (Shipp, 2021). Despite the opportunities to embed Indigenous perspectives, many Indigenous scholars have challenged the privileged position of Subject English due to its tendencyto adhere to the dominant norm and silence Indigenous voices (Hogarth, 2022; Worrell, 2024; Phillipset al., 2022; Thomson, 2023b). Some have said English, as a curriculum area, has continued to work asa tool of the settler-colonial system (Worrell, 2024; Wolfe, 2006) as it has established and maintainedcolonial norms in education (Hogarth, 2019; Thomson, 2023b). This paper seeks to provide practicalways to address these critiques through providing strategies for how to showcase Indigenous resiliencewhen reading First Nations literature in Subject English.
