Abstract

In public discourse, rankings and “top school lists” often dominate perceptions of educational quality. However, for parents seeking the best environment for their child, a school’s ranking alone is insufficient and sometimes misleading. This article argues that a “good school” is one that aligns with a child’s unique needs and prioritises holistic development over narrow performance metrics. Key dimensions that should inform parental judgment include: how well the school supports student wellbeing (social, emotional, psychological), the quality of teaching and the professionalism and continuity of staff, the nature of the curriculum (its openness, flexibility, and capacity for differentiation), the school’s culture and values (inclusivity, sense of belonging, strong pastoral care), and the extent to which the school partners with families and the broader community. The author cautions against overreliance on league tables and exam results, urging parents to visit schools, ask probing questions, and consider which environment will allow their child to thrive in all respects, not just academically.
