Abstract | This paper reports on the role of young people's sense of, and use of, place as they cope with difficulties in their everyday life. Participants aged 13 to 18 completed questionnaires that assessed sense of place dimensions of identity, attachment and dependence, and completed short essays on their favourite places and where they chose to go when feeling distressed or unhappy. They also indicated their knowledge and use of 'youth programs' constructed for their assistance and entertainment. Findings indicated that access to public sites, both natural and built environments, is important to the every day coping strategies of young people. Some distinguished between favourite place and the place that is their source of comfort. While some of these sites were described in terms of the people present for support and activities, many were identified in terms of the physical surroundings. Issues of adolescent sense of place within the residential community, and their perceptions of accessibility to 'adult territory', are discussed. |
