Abstract | Depression and anxiety are the forms of negative affect most often mentioned in chronic pain research. However a substantial association has been found between anger and chronic pain. This exploratory correlational study follows research that has identified significant levels of hostility in rheumatoid arthritis sufferers (e.g., AchterbergLawlis, 1982), and studies that have associated suppressed anger with pain intensity (e.g., Kerns, Rosenberg, & Jacob, 1994). The association between Trait-anger and arthritic health status is examined in 28 male and 64 female arthritis sufferers, using the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale (AIMS; Meenan, Gertman, & Mason, 1980), and the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory — Version 2 (STAXI-2; Spielberger, 1999) to measure arthritic health status and anger respectively. A bivariate correlational analysis shows a significant association between overall arthritic health status and both Trait-Anger and Anger Expression-Out. Standard multiple regression shows that Trait-Anger is moderately successful in predicting overall arthritic health status. Contrary to previous findings, Anger-Out rather than Anger-In is most strongly associated with arthritic health status. Implications for practice and research are discussed. |
