Abstract | This paper uses the developing research on distributed leadership (DL) as a ‘lens’ for examining leadership paradigms and considers the implications for leadership of age-based cognitive changes (Avolio 2007; Spillane 2006). Shared cognition and emergent leadership are central to DL and tapping employee cognition becomes a key leadership activity. Fluid intelligence is a principal component of cognition (the other main component is crystallised intelligence) and is related to creativity and problem solving. However, fluid intelligence is known to decline with age. Thus, businesses that wish to promote problem solving in novel environments and creativity may have to rethink leadership models that traditionally rely on age-related hierarchical forms of command and control. |
