Abstract | A large number of studies on arsenic (As) and fluoride (F) in groundwater have been carried out over the last decades and elevated concentration of these elements have been identified especially in South East Asian countries and Inner Mongolia, Northern China, and Latin American countries. We have taken literature based investigations on quality of groundwater with special reference to the occurrences of As and F in groundwater. There is a common notion that there is plenty of water resources on our planet, that would be considered to be an infinite source to be sufficient for the future. The volume of groundwater has been roughly estimated between 7 to 330 million m3, and its residence time at depth of 120m varies between 2 weeks to more than 10,000 years, wheras oceans and sea waters at depth of 2,500m about 4000 years (cited by Bhattacharya & Mukherjee, 2002). As per the World Health Organization (WHO), 22% of the world population do not get clean drinking water. |
