Abstract

The debate in Australia about the value and size of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art production is contentious. Some proponents claim that art contributes far more than sales income to communities. Others argue that art production in remote communities is supported by government funding and a few successful artists, maintaining that art centres should be more market focused. In his paper our objective is to present findings of the Art Economies Value Chain Project. The research examines the economic value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art production and the art market. From this research, a 'sideways' story has evolved which indicates that the 'money story' for artists and art businesses is varied, as are the business models of art centres. Commercial opportunities are not always where they are assumed to be and may in fact be found by 'looking sideways'.
