Abstract | A shortage of Registered Nurses globally could be resolved by retraining two cohorts: Internationally Qualified Nurses and domestic health care workers, including Health Care Assistants (UK) and Enrolled Nurses (Australia). An international literature review found elements of the university experience present as both barriers and sources of strength. Academic and study skills are raised by both cohorts, and the international nurses add cultural, communication, and language skills. Relationships with peers and academics may frustrate or encourage student nurses. Finally, the impact of previous caring experience may hinder or ease progress towards the RN qualification. This poses the question – what can we do in the University to ease the journey of these students? |
