Abstract | The importance of recognising and addressing social and environmental issues through long-term and sustainable solutions is well-established. Recent years have seen a rise in the popularity and acceptance of entrepreneurship as a tool to not only provide these solutions, but also develop enduring products and processes, preserve nature and ecosystems, reduce environmental degradation as well as deliver economic and non-economic benefits (Cohen and Winn, 2007; Dean and McMullen, 2007; Shepherd and Patzelt, 2011). This has resulted in the emergence of a promising field of enquiry termed as sustainable entrepreneurship, that is informed by literature on sustainable development, entrepreneurship, ecopreneurship, environmental entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship among others (Mair and Marti, 2006; Lu, 2014; Schaltegger and Wagner; 2010; Shepherd and Patzelt, 2011). Contributing to the above discussion, the proposed chapter will explore the sustainability dimensions relevant to social enterprises and examine the tensions that arise in their pursuit as well as practices used to resolve them in the context of the Indian nonprofit and social enterprise landscape. |
