Abstract

A pathway program at the USQ College (University of Southern Queensland) provides access to university for under-represented students. This program has a high intake of students, with the majority studying online. In 2018 a small team of academic advisors was established to explore options for an innovative and sustainable online solution to improve student academic success and transitions into pathway and undergraduate studies. With limited evidence of effective, online academic advising programs, the team developed their own multi-faceted online approach. This framework uses a sustainable tiered system that supports student self-efficacy, ranging from self-directed learning experiences that encourage agency in decision-making, to more targeted and tailored interventions based on students' needs. This approach is facilitated through an online environment called The Zone. This presentation explicates the experience of designing and embedding an online academic advising framework, reports data on the student experience and includes questions to facilitate discussion.
