Biography

I am a Lecturer (Pathways, UniSQ College) and Adjunct Researcher (Centre for Astrophysics) at the University of Southern Queensland. I completed a Doctorate in Astrophysics, from the University of Sydney, focussed on the fundamental analysis and modelling of magnetically-driven turbulence in protostellar disks, a crucial mechanism to enable the formation of new stars. I have subsequently developed a significant research program focussed on the mathematical and computational modelling of key astrophysical systems, with strong contributions to fundamental understanding and modelling of gas dynamics processes. I have also convened and delivered mathematics and physics courses in tertiary education, significantly increasing student satisfaction and completion rates. I am currently leading innovative projects to enhance mathematics and science outcomes and have recent contributions to the field of Adult Numeracy, including collaboratively developing an Academic Numeracies Framework, designed to assist the Learning Advisors and academic staff to develop the students' academic numeracies and their confidence and competence to use mathematics at university level. I also have a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, and I have worked as an Analytics Manager in the aviation industry, leading analysis work to assess air traffic management performance, and identifying areas for improvement.

Development of an interactive Academic Numeracies Framework Tool to facilitate the systematic embedding of numeracies into university curriculaThis grant is intended to support the development of an interactive and easy to use Academic Numeracies Framework tool (the Framework). This tool aims to inform and facilitate the systematic embedding of numeracies in courses, programs and study support initiatives in university curricula. The key aims are: 1. Professionally design, develop, and test the functionalities of an interactive intuitive version of the Academic Numeracies Framework, to inform and facilitate the systematic embedding of numeracies in courses, programs and learning development initiatives in tertiary institutions. 2. Professionally design, develop and test the functionalities of a student friendly, interactive version of the Framework to enable students to self-map their perceived numeracy levels and knowledge against the requirements of courses, programs and learning development initiatives. 3. Significantly enhance the effectiveness of the Framework, and promote its use, by providing an intuitive interface that steps users through its elements (mitigating the risk of ‘information overload’) as well as context-based guidance on its use. 4. Enable the efficient and reliable capture, aggregation and analysis of data, both to inform users and to mature the tool. 5. Foster transparency and inform conversations that incorporate the student voice in the mapping of numeracies to university curricula. 2024
The Formation of Stars and PlanetsARC Discovery Project DP120101792. This project builds on advanced theoretical and computational work to develop realistic, physics-based models of the dusty discs encircling young stars. These discs are the locations where planets form and are the launch points for dramatic outflows. This work provides a new paradigm solidly based upon theoretical analysis and simulations of magnetic phenomena in partially ionised gases.2012
