Abstract | Being critically aware of, and having the capacity to, confidently and competently use mathematics at University level (academic numeracy) is needed to succeed in a wide range of tertiary studies and the workplace. A systematic approach to academic numeracy is highly beneficial, as it would promote alignment, continuity and sustainability of programs, courses, resources and study-support initiatives implemented by tertiary institutions, as well as the embedding of numeracy into the curriculum. This project employs an action research process, complemented by a mixed-methods analysis, to produce a mature, tested and trialled Academic Numeracies Framework (Framework), based on an initial version recently developed at UniSQ. The project will see an expansion of the Framework to incorporate the three elements of numeracy (competency, awareness and confidence), and be further informed through feedback from teaching academics and study support practitioners. An updated version of the Framework will be presented to the community as a tool to embed academic numeracy in tertiary courses, programs and study-support initiatives and in alignment with the anticipated Australian Government’s Support for Students legislation. |
