Biography

Dr Mohammad Mafizur Rahman, known as Mafiz Rahman, is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), Australia. He currently serves as the Head of Economics Discipline at UniSQ. Dr Rahman is also a valued member of the Centre for Health Research and the Institute for Resilient Regions at UniSQ.

He has vast academic qualifications in Economics with a PhD from the University of Sydney, a Master’s, and a Graduate Diploma from The Australian National University (ANU), an M. Sc. and B.Sc. Honours in Economics (with First Class) from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. Dr Rahman taught a range of undergraduate and postgraduate economics courses at the University of Sydney and UniSQ in Australia and the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh.

A leading expert in Applied Economics, Dr Rahman's research interests include Environmental Economics, Energy Economics, Development Economics, Health Economics, and International Economics. His dedication to scholarly endeavours is evident through an impressive publication record, comprising approximately 200 works, among which 145 are peer-reviewed journal articles, with a significant number featured in top-quartile/Q1 SJR journals. He has also authored 41 conference proceedings, a scholarly book, a book chapter, and six reports, often taking the lead authorship.

With a remarkable Google Scholar h-index of 37 and around 5,300 citations, as well as a Scopus h-index of 25 with nearly 2,500 citations, Dr Rahman's research impact is widely recognized. This recognition is exemplified by Stanford University's survey report, which acknowledged him as one of the top 2% most influential researchers worldwide for two consecutive years: 2021 and 2022. His contributions have garnered media attention, and he has been the recipient of prestigious awards, including the First prize in university-wide Journal Publication Excellence Awards (PEAs) competitions in both 2016 and 2017. He has consistently secured School-specific PEAs from 2016 to 2020, achieving first positions in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Notably, he was also the winner of the School of Business 2021 D1 publication award and the top performer in publishing the highest number (27) of Q1 journal papers in 2022 within the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts.

Dr Rahman (along with other colleagues) is a competitive grant winner of over $1 million for two Digital Futures - Collaborative Research Network (CRN) projects, funded by the Federal Government of Australia. He was a Principal Investigator for one project. He is also an editorial team member of four academic journals (2Q1) in the field of economics and business and examined 33 PhD theses of Australian and foreign universities along with the review of numerous prestigious journal papers.

Dr Rahman has successfully held many leadership roles at UniSQ including Program Coordinator in Business Economics major, Associate Academic Performance Supervisor for several staff, elected Faculty Board member and member of the Australian Centre for Sustainable Business and Development. He is an expert media commentator who very often provides expert interviews on TV and radio on various socio-economic issues. He also delivered lectures as a Keynote Speaker at several international conferences.

Dr Rahman successfully supervised 15 doctoral students to completion at UniSQ, and mentored and supported new academics, and early and mid-career researchers including a post-doctoral research fellow. Currently, he is actively supervising five PhD students and welcomes prospective PhD students who possess analytical skills and have publication experience in his areas of interest.
