Abstract	[Abstract]: E-commerce is argued to benefit small and medium enterprises (SMEs) particularly if it is embedded in the business’ strategy. Yet SMEs tend to adopt e-commerce ‘just by chance’ or in a causal manner which tends to be operational rather than strategic. This is especially the case for SMEs in rural and regional areas of Australia. This article looks at adoption enablers and barriers, and explores these issues via a case study of a regional SME located in the Wide Bay region of Australia. It is argued that education, strategic vision and a realization of the role e-commerce has for growth, expansion and changed business practices and models are necessary for SMEs to effectively adopt and accept the day-to-day use of e-commerce as a standard business tool.
