Abstract | This chapter will explain how sport can be understood as a theatrical event. Important to include in this context is the thought that sport and theatre are understood to be professional and to be live performances. A discussion of the common aspects of theatre and sport leads to a consideration of aesthetics and a metaphorical analysis of both forms. Throughout, statistics gained from an audience reception study of the Davis Cup (Scollen, 2000a) will be presented in support of the claims under consideration. |
