Abstract | HPE is privileged by curriculum authorities. It is one of five curriculum areas that Australian school children must have the opportunity to experience during Foundation to Year 10.This is known as a learning entitlement -'learning areas taught to all students in each year of Foundation -Year 10 are: English, mathematics, science, history*, health and physical education' (ACARA, 2011). The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA, 2008) states that the curriculum will ‘enable students to build social and emotional intelligence and nurture student wellbeing through HPE in particular’. Even with these credible and well-intentioned ideals, there can be a disconnect between the curriculum and the realities of delivery - despite the curriculum documents being well-constructed, informed by research, and written by experts in wide consultation with HPE specialists and other major stakeholders. Teachers have the ultimate responsibility for implementation of the curriculum. This session will advocate for planning HPE lessons that are strengths based, personalised and utilise an inquiry approach, to ensure that the intended curriculum is the enacted reality. |
