Abstract | The use of canines for the detection of trace substances has been invaluable to humans in the fields of medicine, security and logistics. Currently, it is a lengthy and expensive process to train these dogs. The integration of modern technologies is likely to result in improved efficiencies for this training process. This review of machine olfaction and the detection of trace substances in air suggests that while these technologies may be useful in the future, their current state does not provide any suitable opportunities for use in the field of canine scent detection. |
