Abstract

After reading Fire Effects on Soil Properties, a lasting effect was my enriched appreciation for the fundamental importance of fire to Earth’s ecosystems and to the his- torical relationship humans have with the natural world. Fire has always played an important role in natural equi- libria belowground and above-ground. With the ability to manipulate fire, hominins were able to dominate, but with some drastic impacts on ecosystems.
Whether ignited naturally (e.g. volcano, lightning) or through human fire management, fire has a powerful influence on the world’s biomes. But as the authors here highlight, this influence ‘cannot be understood without taking into account the effects of fire’. This text does exactly that, looking at the effects on soils which, when subjected to fire, can be positively or negatively impacted. The importance of soil to ecosystems globally needs no argument, and thus, the importance of under- standing the effects of fire on soil properties is obvious.
