| Abstract | The aim of this study is to explore key challenges of engineering education. In particular, the study is concentrated on two specific challenges - student engagement and employability skills. Major challenges in engineering education are increased work-based students and demand for online education, lack of student engagement in online education and competency deficiencies of engineering graduates. Identified competency deficiencies involve gaps in problem solving skills; communication, teamwork, interpersonal and leadership skills; business and project management skills; application of engineering skills and emotional intelligence skills.
