Abstract | The Council of Deans Nursing and Midwifery (CDNM) is an organisation providing leadership to academics and is comprised of the Deans and Heads of Schools of Nursing and Midwifery in universities offering programmes leading to registration as a nurse or midwife in Australia and New Zealand (NZ). Key organisational activities include influencing health policy, nursing education and the clinical practice environment. An important role of the CDNM is to foster succession planning by supporting the development of rising and aspiring academic leaders. In 2020, the CDNM launched the inaugural Aspiring Deans Leadership Development Programme which coincided with the World Health Organization’s Year of the Nurse and Midwife. The purpose of this 12-month programme is to provide mentorship and leadership coaching to academic nurses and midwives aspiring to be the next generation of academic leaders. Successful applicants are assigned an experienced academic mentor. A leadership coach works with participants to determine individual leadership styles and to assist with leadership goal setting. Opportunities for participants to attend high level nursing forums to observe leadership in action is offered and includes participation in CDNM meetings and symposia. In order to determine value for investment, an evaluation is embedded into the programme to ensure the ongoing development of the programme, as well as an opportunity to track the career trajectories of past participants. This presentation provides an overview of the programme and the accompanying evaluation, including recent programme feedback. |
