Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of how parking policy influences automobility and urban settlement patterns, and explores how the sharing economy is impacting this influence. This overview starts by outlining the three dominant planning approaches as each relates to parking policy: Predict and Provide, Multimodalism, and Demand Management. Following, it examines how the sharing economy is unlocking the value of surplus parking through bay-sharing apps, dark kitchens, and accessory dwelling units. Last, it explores four future scenarios of how parking policy, the sharing economy, and emerging technologies such as micromobility, Mobility-as-a-Service, and autonomous vehicles could shape the future of urban mobility for better or worse. This chapter then concludes with a call for decisive parking policy that is in step with the sharing economy to ensure that the wasteful urban mobility patterns of 20th Century and private automobility are not carried forward into our hyper-connected and potentially autonomous 21st Century.
