Abstract

Roger Dale is a definitive sociologist of education for our time. Deeply concerned with globalisation’s relationship with education, Dale’s scholarly work has spanned both contexts and decades. I had encountered his writings only months before I met him in person at the beginning of my doctoral studies, but I’ll never forget his first words to me: ‘Ah, you’re my doctoral grandbaby!’ My PhD was indeed being supervised by one of his former doctoral students—Professor Elizabeth Rata—and as a critical examination of higher
education policy in Afghanistan, my thesis came to be heavily informed by Dale’s published work. I have been fortunate to have several personal encounters with Dale during the last few years as I pursued my PhD. These personal interactions between a global giant of critical sociology of education and a newly minted doctoral candidate offer a particular perspective to Dale’s work.
