Biography
Dr Guangnan Chen is currently an Associate Professor in agricultural engineering at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. He graduated from the University of Sydney with a PhD degree in 1994. Before joining the University of Southern Queensland in early 2002, he worked for two years as a post-doctoral fellow and more than five years in a private consulting company based in New Zealand. Dr Chen teaches and researches in the subjects of agricultural machinery, agricultural materials and post-harvest technologies, agricultural soil mechanics, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture. He has so far published 150 papers in various international journals and conferences, including four edited research books in farm machinery and energy.
Furthermore. I am successful in receiving the following externally funded research projects in the recent years:
* Novel Energy and Evaporative Storage Technologies for Irrigators. This five-year multi-million dollar project will develop technical, economic, policy, and legal frameworks to establish a sustainable Australian floating solar PV market for irrigators. Both field trials and CFD modelling and optimization of the systems will be conducted. This project is being funded by Australian Government Future Drought Fund from 2025.
* Optimising Floating Solar Covers for Evaporation Mitigation. Water and energy are often the two limiting factors in agricultural production. The floating photovoltaic systems have the unique advantages that it can reduce both on-farm water storage evaporation while producing energy. This project will evaluate the PV system design and also the technology for converting excess renewable energy into green hydrogen and green ammonia for on-farm applications (funded by Cotton Research and Development Corporation, 2024)
* Air Operated Sample Probes - Pneumatic Material Transfer. With around 70% of Australia's grain being exported, sampling and compliance is crucial for ensuring the quality and integrity of Australian grain exports. Currently, the industry is using one sampler for different size of grain which can lead to potential inaccuracy and quality misclassification. This work will identify the necessary parameters for accurate grain subsampling and develop new sampling technology for further adoption by the agricultural industry (funded by Grains Research and Development Corporation, 2025).
