Biography

Dr Liz Ryan commenced as a Lecturer in Nursing at the University of New England in 2011 and was promoted to Level C in 2021. As part of these roles, she conducted a 100 % service role as Program Director for two undergraduate programs, and Clinical Coordinator Academic, overseeing nursing clinical placements. Additional to this, she was Disability Liaison for the School of Health and Medicine, and First Year Leader in undergraduate nursing. Despite being heavily involved in service and management roles for up to 3 years, she was able to complete her PhD in the allocated timeframe between 2017-2021, publish 7 publications, contribute to numerous book chapters, and present at local and national conferences, forums, and education sessions.

Dr Ryan’s research activity was reduced for several years due to workload commitments and 100% service allocation, and there was limited opportunity to engage in research. Since commencing employment at the University of Southern Queensland in September 2022, she has actively sought opportunity to engage in collaboration, capacity building and development within the research space, and this has brought to fruition further opportunity for research participation and learning. With a 20% research allocation, she has been able to obtain two grants, and successfully engage in collaboration in the research space. Dr Ryan has been successful in gaining formal research mentorship through the School of Nursing and Midwifery, been part of the Early Career Researcher’s Community of Practice, both university wide and within the school. She has been able to attend several research training opportunities, and has commenced supervision of two HDR students, joining the HDR supervisors Community of Practice. Additionally, she has provided research mentorship to two clinicians in a formal Darling Downs Health Innovation and Research mentorship collaboration. Dr Ryan has presented her research at the School of Nursing and Midwifery Research Nibbles and has been part of one Confirmation of Candidature panel as an expert external for another university.

Dr Ryan has published in several D1 journals, contributed to a number of book chapters, and presented at Australian conferences. Her research area is around nursing interventions, patient safety, and nursing educational frameworks for undergraduate nurses. Published work from Dr Ryan has been well cited in D1 journals within nursing, (n=206), and though an early career researcher, has a H index of 4, with this building capacity. 90% of journal articles have been first author. D1 journals have been in the top 95% of nursing journals, for example the Journal of Clinical Nursing, ranked as 6th out of 130, and the Journal of Advanced Nursing, ranked 10th of 130 in the general category of nursing journals published globally. The Journal of Clinical Nursing is one of the top nursing journals and is an international leader in nursing practice among researchers, clinicians, and policy makers, as is the Journal of Advanced Nursing.
