Abstract | Currently about 50% of the highway bridges in the world are over 40 years. There is an urgent need for increased research efforts in the areas of bridge inspection, evaluation and rehabilitation. Maintenance and rehabilitation of bridges is necessary to preserve the intended load carrying capacity and to ensure the safety of those using it. External Post-tensioning is one of the widely used techniques for strengthening of bridge elements such as girders and headstocks. While several studies have been done on the flexural and shear strengthening using external post-tensioning, there are limited studies on the effect of existing cracks on the member capacity. A series of experimental investigation was carried out on the shear strengthening of headstocks using scaled models. One of the main test variables was the repair of existing cracks using epoxy injection. From the experimental studies it was found that the existing cracks in a bridge element has considerable influence on the load carrying capacity of the member when strengthened by external post-tensioning. Epoxy injection of cracks was found to considerably increase the capacity of the member. This paper presented the experimental results including the effect of epoxy injection of existing cracks of headstocks strengthened by external post tensioning. It also describes the numerical model developed to predict the behaviour of such bridge elements. Moreover, a case study of the Tenthill creek bridge strengthened using this technology is presented. |
