Abstract | Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have great potential in civil engineering applications due to their advantageous physical and chemical properties, economical and environmental benefits. However, as a new material used in the civil engineering applications, it is important to understand its behaviour under eccentric loading conditions similar to the conventional construction materials such as timber, steel and concrete columns. This study involves experimental investigations on hollow FRP pultruded column sections under pure and eccentric axial loading. Results obtained from the testing were used to produce a moment interaction diagram similar to that used in concrete column design, providing engineers with a safe envelope for fibre composite sections to be used as columns. Further investigation is necessary to fully understand the behaviour of such sections when the moment interaction is dominated by flexural forces. |
