Abstract | The application of fibre composites in civil infrastructure has been an emerging trend globally in the last decade. In Australia, the pioneering work was initiated at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) within the Centre of Excellence in Engineered Fibre Composites (CEEFC) in late 1990s resulting in the first Australian fibre composite bridge being installed in Toowoomba in 2002. Since then, the CEEFC has focus on projects which involve new and innovative design and structural concepts to make engineered fibre composites a suitable solution and cost effective alternative to existing construction materials. These efforts of the CEEFC have shown that there is a huge potential into the application of fibre composites in civil infrastructure. This paper will discuss the field applications and case studies on advanced fibre composite materials in civil infrastructure taking place around Australia. These projects include sustainable fibre composite beams for replacement of hardwood timber bridge girders, pile rehabilitation and replacement systems using engineered fibre composites, fibre composite piles, fibre composite railway sleepers, strengthening of existing structures, structural sandwich composites for building and construction, and other innovative applications of engineered fibre composites in civil infrastructure. Education campaign, knowledge sharing, and training to engineers and students in the area of fibre composites for civil infrastructure are also presented. |
