Abstract | Prepregs, resin-impregnated composite materials, are critical to high-end applications in aeronautics, defense, automotive, and energy sectors due to their exceptional properties. However, the development of prepreg resin matrices remains largely underexplored, with advancements often guarded as trade secrets. This presentation delves into three pivotal parameters for epoxy resin matrix development—B-staging, viscosity, and tackiness - along with their intricate interdependencies and control strategies. B-staging, the partially cured state of epoxy prepregs, is particularly vital for layup processes, pot life, and ultimate performance. Accurate control of these parameters is essential for optimizing prepreg properties. Measurement techniques for these parameters are also addressed in detail. Furthermore, two innovative resin formulation approaches are proposed: conventional resin impregnation and viscosity-controlled resin impregnation. These strategies offer transformative potential, enabling advancements beyond existing prepreg applications. They pave the way for developing smart materials and functional composites through cutting-edge resin modifications. This keynote provides a comprehensive review of current practices and emerging trends, offering actionable insights for advancing prepreg technologies. |
