Abstract | Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok, with whom Jacques Derrida was a close friend and to whose work he often responded, were Hungarian Jews who escaped the Holocaust; in their work, however, this history meets with silence. This chapter argues that their work on crypts and mourning also describes the structure of their own writing and its relation to their 'shared' past. The chapter asks more broadly, can a crypt be shared, what are the mechanisms by which such a thing can happen, and what are the implications of this for literary theory? |
