Abstract | Attempts to identify typical early modern publishing practices tend to treat variation as divergence from the norm. This chapter considers the careers of three supposedly 'bad' publishers--Peter Short, Thomas Millington, and John Danter--to show that the publication of 'corrupt' Shakespeare quartos could result from the market for new plays and innovative publishing strategies that were entirely consistent with the established culture of the guild. |
