Abstract | As studies of early modern English playing companies become increasingly concerned with the active role of the players in promoting the economic, familial, and political interests of their patrons, it also becomes more important that the performance and payment records of playing companies are accurately assigned to the relevant patrons. Can we be certain whose interests the players are promoting in any given instance? This essay uses the case of John Dudley to raise and resolve a number of issues in the assignment of patronage in the decades before Elizabeth’s succession, with answers that have significant implications for studying the patronage of Shakespearean companies in the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. |
