Abstract | Fit & Fuelled Kids is community health program designed to improve health outcomes by increasing levels of physical activity, active transport, and healthy eating among primary school‐aged children in Ipswich. Developed and delivered by Ipswich City Council, the program enjoys strong demand and is very well received in the schools in which it has operated. This report provides an assessment of whether the program is achieving the purpose it was designed to accomplish. Evidence suggests that the program is largely effective in meeting most of its goals. The least successful component of the program, active transport, may be hindered by infrastructure factors in schools’ surrounding neighbourhoods – factors that are beyond the control of the program itself. Council may need to give careful consideration to the process it uses to select schools and the values that underpin that process. Recommendations are made with the aim of improving the reach and effectiveness of the program, as well as its capacity for achieving stated goals. |
