Abstract

This research examines the construction in the twentieth-century United States of an ideology of human rights by looking at political rhetoric and media representation of human rights in foreign policy. Four case studies are examined:
Woodrow Wilson and the Paris Peace Talks of 1919;
The United States and the San Francisco Conference, 1945;
Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign of 1976;
and The United States and China - Tiananmen, 1989.
